Building the Future: Homes for Britain

Posted on: 24/04/2020

On the 11th March 2020, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, presented the government’s annual Spring Budget to a congregation of journalists and press-packers all huddled onto the pavement outside 11 Downing Street. It came a year after the government promised to “start on the road to delivering the high-quality housing and infrastructure the country so desperately needs.” In his budget, Sunak elaborated on spending commitments for the coming year, outlining the government’s commitment to make an additional £9.5bn available through the Affordable Homes Programme from 2021/22 to support the delivery of new and affordable homes across England.

Of course, building new, affordable and desirable homes on time and in budget isn’t easy. Having access to sustained and responsible funding is vitally important, but so too is having access to the right land, and having the consent of local people, and local communities. With all these challenges in place, housing associations in particular, face an uphill battle to deliver the safe and affordable homes promised.

To gain a deeper understanding of how housing associations are coping with the build pressures of modern Britain, Executive TV’s latest programme, entitled, Building the Future: Homes for Britain, meets with one of the country’s most successful housing associations, Bromford. In this episode, we discuss the challenges and rewards involved with building in Britain. We meet with Bromford’s expert land procurement team, their highly skilled builders, their committed Neighbourhood Coaching Team and their industry renowned executive team. In our latest episode on housing, Bromford truly demonstrate that building homes for Britain needn’t be so hard.

Martyn Blackman, Bromford’s chief investment officer, said: “There are some real challenges for the sector to overcome, none more so than the current coronavirus pandemic. As we begin to realise the potential of bringing three organisations together, it has been great to showcase some of the approaches we are taking in order to help address the UK’s housing crisis.”

Building the Future: Homes for Britain will be first broadcast on channel, My TV (Sky channel 191) on Sunday 26th April at 10.00am and then, on Sunday 10th May at 10.00am.

After the final broadcast, the programme will be available at http://www.executivetv.org/ with the rest of our digital archive.
